Medicare Plan D is one of the many Medicare Supplement choices available to you. All Medicare supplement plans (also known as Medigap plans) are designed to fill in the benefit gaps of Original Medicare.

Medicare Supplement Plan D

Medicare Supplement Plan D is provides shoppers a balanced amount of coverage. Plan D doesn’t have the most benefits and isn’t the most comprehensive plan. 

However, it provides adequate coverage and their premiums are typically less expensive compared to Medigap plans with more benefits.

Medigap Plan D is not Medicare Part D
It very important to understand the differences of “Plan D” and “Part D”. We’ll explain more later on, but to summarize: Plan D is one of 10 Medigap plans and PART D is for prescription drugs.

What Medicare Plan D Covers

A Medicare Supplement Plan D insurance policy provides coverage for most of the gaps in Original Medicare. Let’s see exactly what Plan D covers:

  • Medicare Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs (Covered)
  • Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance or Copayment (Covered)
  • Medicare Part B Coinsurance and Copayment (Covered)
  • Skilled nursing facility Coinsurance (Covered)
  • Blood (First 3 Pints) (Covered)
  • Medicare Part A Deductible (Covered)
  • Foreign Travel Emergency – 80% (Covered)
  • Medicare Part B Excess charges (Not Covered)
  • Medicare Part B Deductible (Not Covered)

What Medicare Plan D WON’T Cover

Medigap Plan D will not cover your Medicare Part B Deductible. Plan D won’t cover any Excess Charges. 

Foreign Travel Emergencies aren’t fully covered, but they are up to 80%.

Medicare Plan D and Part D are DIFFERENT

There are many confusing parts about Medicare and this is one of the big ones. People are often confused to hear  that Medicare Supplement Plan and Medicare Part D are completely different.

  • Medicare Supplement Plan D, also referred to as Medigap Plan D, is an insurance plan that companies offer consumers to cover the gaps in Original Medicare.
  • Unlike Medicare Part D, Medicare Supplement Plan D is not a prescription drug plan and will not cover prescription drug costs.
