Kentucky Medicare Supplement Plans
If you’re trying to find the best Kentucky Medicare Supplement plans (also called Medigap), you’ve come to the right place. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to compare plans and find the best value when shopping for Kentucky Medigap plans.
Best Medicare Supplement Plans In Kentucky
The best supplement plans in Kentucky will depend on a few factors. Your age, gender, zip code and tobacco use will be factors that help determine which plan can provide the most value. The best plan and company for a 65 year old male nonsmoker may be completely different than a 70 year old female who smokes. Let’s go over the most popular plans and how to find the best value.
Medigap Plan Options
When you become eligible for Medicare, there will be 10 Medigap supplement options available to you. During your Medigap open enrollment, you’ll want to choose one of these 10 plans that fill in the gaps of Original Medicare.
Let’s go over the 3 most popular plans.
Plan F
Plan F was the most popular Medicare plan a few years ago when it was available to all Medicare beneficiaries. However, it isn’t available to everyone at this time. If your enrollment period is starting now, you won’t be able to get it. Plan F is only available for qualified beneficiaries that had Medicare on or before December 31, 2019.
Plan G
Plan G is currently the most popular plan. It has all the benefits of Plan F with the exception of the Part B Deductible. Once you meet the Part B deductible, then it acts just like Plan F.
Plan N
Plan N is the 2nd most popular plan. You have to pay the Part B deductible just like Plan G, but you also have Part B Excess charges. Plan N pays 100% of the Part B Coinsurance, except for a Copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don’t result in inpatient admission.
Kentucky Medigap Benefits
Original Medicare is made up of Medicare Part A (Hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical insurance). Many people enrolled in Medicare are surprised to hear that Original Medicare doesn’t cover 100% of medical costs. Medigap plans fill in the gaps that Original Medicare won’t. It’s important to understand that Medigap Plan benefits are the exact same no matter what company you choose just as long as your pick the same plan letter. This applies to all Medigap plan letters. You do not get better benefits by selecting a big or small company.
How To Save Money On Medicare Supplement Insurance In Kentucky
How much will you pay for your Kentucky Medicare Supplement Insurance? You’re not getting more benefits by paying more. So don’t overpay! Let’s look at Medigap and compare it to an everyday purchase. Think of Medigap plans like buying a can of Coke. The quality of the can of Coke is the same at every store. However, the Coke may have different prices from each store in your town. If it costs $1.50 at 7/11, but $1 at Wawa then you’ll usually buy it at Wawa. This is how Medigap works. If you want to purchase a specific plan letter, then shop that letter with all the companies in your KY Zip Code. If you are shopping for Plan N, shop all Plan N plans in your Zip Code.
How Much Can Kentucky Residents Save?
Here’s a quick example: Plan premiums with one carrier can be very different from another carrier. Remember, the benefits are the same even if the premiums are different. We calculated sample quotes from multiple states to show you what the lowest and highest rates are for a 65 year old (non tobacco) male shopping for a Medigap Plan G. The average monthly premiums from “A” rated companies are:
- Average Lowest Monthly Rate: $128
- Average Highest Monthly Rate: $190
Your Potential Monthly Savings!
$
0
Those savings are huge… That’s an annual savings of $744!
Again, these plan savings all come with the same benefits.
Since the benefits are the same, the only difference from each company is PRICE!
Compare Medicare Supplements
Comparison shopping is extremely important if you want to save money. You must make sure that you are not spending more than you have to for the exact same coverage. It is important to know that even though the coverage for these plans are the same, the rates are not. You need to compare the plan letters from company to company. For example, compare Medicare Supplement Plan G from multiple companies. Medicare Supplement insurance plan Premium prices are different when comparing insurance companies.
Plans are standardized
Before you start trying to compare plans, you need to make sure you understand how these plans are setup. The Medigap lettered plans are standardized. These policies are regulated by the government. This is a safety net put in place by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) to protect you. Companies, by law, can’t make any changes to standardized Medigap benefits. CMS, however, does not regulate premiums. Insurers adjust rates based on inflation, overhead, medical pay outs, marketing, etc.
This means that when you shop for a specific Medicare Supplement Plan letter it will provide you the same exact coverage no matter the company you buy from.
That’s right.
Your Medicare coverage is the same no matter if the Plan M is from Blue Cross Blue Shield, Mutual of Omaha, Cigna or any other Medicare Supplement company.
It’s the LAW!
What about Medicare Advantage Plans in Kentucky?
The Medicare Advantage Plans in Kentucky (aka MAPD) are a type of health insurance plan that is offered by private companies that contract with Medicare. These plans are either HMO or PPOs that provide beneficiaries with all of their Part A and Part B benefits, and they may also offer extra coverage, such as Prescription Drug Coverage or routine vision and dental care.
This type of plan can be complicated and stressful. They have networks, require Prior authorization, and the company is now controlling your health care. Medicare is no longer managing your health care.
