You may or may not have heard about “Doctor’s Accepting Assignment.” When Medicare physicians don’t accept assignment rates, they can charge you the Excess charge. Be aware that the excess charge is not allowed in some states. For Medicare shoppers who reside in these “no excess charge” states, they’ll notice that their Medigap Plan C works like a Plan F.
Medigap Plan C is NOT the same as Part C
Medicare Supplement Plan C is 1 of 10 different medicare supplement plans that are available to people shopping for coverage. It is different than Medicare Part C.
Medicare sure makes things confusing don’t they? Let’s break it down into simple terms:
- Medicare Supplement Plan C (also known as Medigap Plan C) is an insurance plan you buy to cover the 20% gap in coverage from Original Medicare.
- Medicare Part C is another label for a Medicare Advantage policy. Medicare Advantage (aka Part C) isn’t a “supplement”, but it another type of insurance policy. If fact it’s very different than a Supplement and more like an HMO or PPO with a network of doctors.
When you purchase a Medigap Plan C, you aren’t handcuffed to a network of doctors. You’re free to go see any doctor or hospital who accepts Medicare. You can let out a sigh of relief if you ever need to see the “best doctor” in your area for whatever reason. It’s one of the biggest advantages of Medigap – No Networks!
