Medicare Plan C

By:Michael Quinn Published onApril 29, 2020June 9, 2023 Updated onJune 9, 2023

Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan C is one of the five Medigap policies that offer nearly all of the basic coverage possible. However, it doesn’t cover everything and you will be responsible for some specific types of care. Let’s look closer into Medicare Plan C. When you’re finished, make sure to check out the other Medicare plans available to you below.

In this article we’ll discuss:
  • Medicare Plan C Coverage
  • Medicare Supplement Plan C Does NOT Cover
  • Doctor's Who Don't Accept Assignment
  • Medigap Plan C is NOT the same as Part C
  • Get Medigap Plan C Quotes

Medicare Plan C Coverage

Medicare Supplement Plan C covers the following Medicare expenses:

  • Medicare Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs (Covered)
  • Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance or Copayment (Covered)
  • Foreign Travel Emergency (up to plan limits) – (Covered)
  • Medicare Part B Coinsurance and Copayment (Covered)
  • Medicare Part B Deductible (Covered)
  • Medicare Part A Deductible (Covered)
  • Blood (First 3 Pints) (Covered)
  • Medicare Part B Excess charges (Not Covered)

Medigap Plan C will provide coverage for all of your basic Original Medicare benefits, which includes your preventative care coinsurance, your Part A hospital coinsurance, Part B deductible, and more.

Medicare Supplement Plan C Does NOT Cover

Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan C does not cover any Medicare Part B excess charges. Your Medicare Part B excess charges are surcharges that your physician may charge above what Original Medicare will reimburse for a procedure. to Original Medicare costs for a procedure. These charges are limited to 15% beyond what Original Medicare will pay.

This is quite uncommon for physician’s to charge excess charges, but it does happen. You just need to be aware that Medicare Supplement Plan C will not provide coverage for these charges if your physician includes them.

Medicare Supplement BenefitsPlan C covers?

Doctor’s Who Don’t Accept Assignment

Medicare Supplement Plans

You may or may not have heard about “Doctor’s Accepting Assignment.” When Medicare physicians don’t accept assignment rates, they can charge you the Excess charge. Be aware that the excess charge is not allowed in some states. For Medicare shoppers who reside in these “no excess charge” states, they’ll notice that their Medigap Plan C works like a Plan F.

Medigap Plan C is NOT the same as Part C

Medicare Supplement Plan C is 1 of 10 different medicare supplement plans that are available to people shopping for coverage. It is different than Medicare Part C.

Medicare sure makes things confusing don’t they? Let’s break it down into simple terms:

  • Medicare Supplement Plan C (also known as Medigap Plan C) is an insurance plan you buy to cover the 20% gap in coverage from Original Medicare.
  • Medicare Part C is another label for a Medicare Advantage policy. Medicare Advantage (aka Part C) isn’t a “supplement”, but it another type of insurance policy. If fact it’s very different than a Supplement and more like an HMO or PPO with a network of doctors.

When you purchase a Medigap Plan C, you aren’t handcuffed to a network of doctors. You’re free to go see any doctor or hospital who accepts Medicare. You can let out a sigh of relief if you ever need to see the “best doctor” in your area for whatever reason. It’s one of the biggest advantages of Medigap – No Networks!

Did you know that there are dozens of insurance companies that offer Medicare supplement insurance in each state. Many of these Medicare insurance companies will be recognizable as they are always on TV commercials.

Some companies are not as well known, but offer the exact same benefits. These unfamiliar companies have solid financial ratings that can provide you a great opportunity at saving a lot of money without sacrificing coverage. They just don’t advertise as much as the so called “big” companies.
