How the Process Works: Getting Medicare Coverage With REMEDIGAP
Most people who contact us for the first time are not sure exactly what they need. They know Medicare is coming, or they know their current plan is not working, and they want someone to help them figure it out.
That is exactly the right starting point. You do not need to know what you want before you talk to us. That is our job.
Here is what the process actually looks like, from first contact to covered and confident.
Step 1: The First Conversation
It starts with a conversation. No paperwork. No forms. No commitment. Not sure what to ask? Start with our guide on questions to ask your Medicare agent.
You can reach us by phone or by filling out a contact form. Either way, someone on our team will get back to you promptly and schedule a time to talk when it is convenient for you.
In that first conversation, we listen. We ask about your situation: when you are turning 65 (or when you are already on Medicare), whether you are still working, what doctors and specialists you see, what prescriptions you take, and what concerns or questions you have already.
We are not trying to rush to a recommendation in the first five minutes. We are trying to understand your situation so we can give you real guidance, not a generic sales pitch.
This conversation can be as long or as short as you need it to be. There is no timer. There is no script. We have clients who have all their questions answered in 20 minutes, and clients who need three conversations over a few weeks before they feel ready. Both are fine.
Step 2: We Explain Your Options
Once we understand your situation, we walk you through your options.
For most people, the first thing we explain is the fundamentals of Original Medicare. Then we go over the variety of plans available to you. This is the foundation of every upcoming decision you will make.
We go through the trade-offs in plain language. What each option covers. What it costs. What it does not cover. How your doctors factor in. How your prescriptions factor in. What happens if you need a specialist or a hospital stay.
We do not assume you already know how Medicare works. We start from where you are.
If you have already made some decisions, or if you already have Medicare and are reviewing your current coverage, we adjust. We meet you where you are.
Step 3: We Show You Specific Options
Once you have a clear picture of the landscape, we get specific.
If Medigap is the right fit for you, we will pull rates from multiple carriers for the plan that makes sense for your situation, such as Medicare Plan G. We will show you the comparison, explain the differences between carriers (financial ratings, rate history, company reputation), and tell you which one we would recommend and why.
We do not show you one option and tell you it is the best. We show you the comparison so you can see for yourself.
If your situation calls for a Medicare Advantage plan instead, or if you need help selecting a Part D drug plan alongside your Medigap coverage, we’ll go over that too.
By the end of this step, you are looking at real numbers for real plans available to you in your area.
Step 4: We Handle the Application
When you are ready to move forward, we take care of the paperwork.
We submit the application on your behalf, or we walk you through it together if you prefer. Either way, we make sure everything is completed correctly and submitted to the right carrier.
We follow up with the carrier to confirm receipt and track the application to make sure it processes without issue.
During this time, we are available if you have questions. If anything comes up during Underwriting (for applications outside the open enrollment window), we guide you through that process and explain exactly what is happening.
Step 5: You Receive Your Coverage
When your coverage is approved and active, you will receive your insurance card in the mail.
We will reach out to confirm everything arrived and make sure you know how to use your coverage. Which card to show at the doctor’s office. What to do if you receive a bill you do not understand. Who to call if something comes up.
For most of our clients, the coverage kicks in smoothly and they start using it right away. For many, the first doctor’s visit under their new Medigap plan is a revelation. The bill is zero (or just the Deductible, depending on the plan). The process was simple. It worked exactly as described.
Step 6: We Stay With You
This is where our process differs from a lot of other agencies.
Enrollment is not the end of our relationship. It is the beginning of it.
We review your Medigap Premium at renewal each year. If a carrier raises rates significantly and a better option exists, we will let you know and help you consider whether switching makes sense.
We are available by phone when you have questions. When you get a confusing explanation of benefits. When you move to a new state and wonder how that affects your Medigap coverage. When Medicare sends you a letter you do not understand. We are the people you call.
Medicare is a long-term commitment. We are in it for the long term with you.
How Long Does This Take?
The timeline from first conversation to active coverage depends on your situation.
If you are in your Medigap open enrollment window and applying for the first time, the process typically takes a few weeks from application to card in hand. Some carriers are faster.
If you are outside your open enrollment window and need to go through underwriting, the timeline can be a few weeks longer depending on the carrier’s review process.
You can also read why working with an independent agent matters before your first call. We will give you a realistic timeline at every step so you are never left wondering what is happening or when to expect your coverage to begin.
What This Is Not
It is not a high-pressure sales environment. We do not use urgency tactics or suggest you will miss out if you do not decide today.
It is not confusing. We make a point of using plain language throughout. If we ever say something that is unclear, ask us to explain it differently. We will.
It is not impersonal. You will work with a real person who knows your name, knows your situation, and is accountable to you.
