Kentucky Medigap Birthday Rule: Switch Medicare Supplement Plans Without Underwriting

By:Michael Quinn Published onJune 11, 2026June 12, 2026 Updated onJune 12, 2026

Kentucky Medicare Supplement policyholders have an annual right to switch Medigap plans without medical Underwriting. The Kentucky Medigap Birthday Rule gives you a 30-day window after your birthday each year — no health questions, no medical exam, no risk of denial.

In this article we’ll discuss:
  • What Is the Kentucky Medigap Birthday Rule?
  • Who Qualifies?
  • Which Plans Can You Switch To?
  • How to Use Kentucky's Birthday Rule
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • The Bottom Line

What Is the Kentucky Medigap Birthday Rule?

Kentucky’s window: 30 days starting on your birthday. During this window, any Medigap carrier you apply to must accept your application at standard rates regardless of your health history.

Who Qualifies?

  • Must be a Kentucky resident
  • Must currently have a Medigap plan
  • Must apply within 30 days of your birthday

Which Plans Can You Switch To?

Kentucky follows the equal-or-lesser standard: you can switch to a plan with equal or fewer benefits than your current plan.

Plan GPlan G (new carrier)Yes
Plan GPlan NYes
Plan NPlan N (new carrier)Yes
Plan NPlan GNo — more benefits, not permitted
Plan FPlan G or lowerYes

How to Use Kentucky’s Birthday Rule

Step 1: Start counting from your birthday — you have 30 days.

Step 2: Get quotes for your current plan letter from multiple Kentucky carriers. With standardized plan benefits, the only difference is the monthly Premium.

Step 3: Apply during the window. No health underwriting. The carrier must accept you.

Step 4: Get written confirmation with an effective date before canceling your current plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this apply to Medicare Advantage? No. Medigap plans only.

Can I be denied due to health problems during my window? No. Guaranteed issue means carriers must accept you.

Can I upgrade to a richer plan? No. The Birthday Rule does not allow upgrades. Apply through medical underwriting if your health allows, or wait for a qualifying guaranteed issue event.

What if I miss the 30-day window? Wait for next year’s birthday window.

The Bottom Line

Kentucky’s 30-day birthday window is your annual chance to shop your Medigap coverage without underwriting risk. Switching to the same plan with a cheaper carrier can save hundreds of dollars annually for identical coverage.
